HMV 102 Gramophone - Coleman Hawkins Orchestra

Here's another new video clip, this time recorded on my c.1934 HMV Model 102 gramophone - this being one of the deluxe models finished in blue rexine. This is Coleman Hawkins & His Orchestra recorded in February 1944 playing 'Disorder At The Border'. Listed personnel are; Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Bud Johnson (Tenor saxes); John "Dizzy" Gillespie (Trumpet); Clyde Hart (Piano); Oscar Pettiford (Bass) and Max Roach (Drums). Born in 1904, Coleman Hawkins was a pioneer of the tenor saxophone in jazz and played with many of the best-known bands in a career starting around 1921. As a band leader he was also reputed to have an eye for new talent:- these 1944 sessions with Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet are regarded as some of the first 'Bebop' recordings ever made. His career slowed at the end of the 1950's and into the 60's but he continued to perform and record up to 1967. By then a heavy drinker with failing health, Hawkins succumbed to liver disease in 1969. This is on the Apollo label, "Masterworks In Jazz" N°753, recorded on 22nd February 1944.
