Punta y Tacón (Sabicas) - Mirza Redzepagic

The fifth and the last composition in Flamenco Classics series is Punta y Tacón de maestro Sabicas. It is a Farruca composed in style that is very close to the classical guitar style. Sabicas, Agustín Castellón Campos (1912 - 1990) is the one of the most important flamenco guitarists and composers. He was born in Pamplona and during the Spanish Civil War, in 1967 he left his home town for Mexico City where he he performed with Carmen Amaya, one of the most famous flamenco dancers. Few years later he moved to New York where he lived until his death. Sabicas introduced the art of flamenco to audiences outside of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world. He was probably best known for his technical skills: blazingly fast picados (scales), fast arpeggios, quality composition for the many forms of flamenco, and infallible rhythm, which was critical when playing with a dancer. He was also considered to have perfect pitch. Sabicas was the one of flamenco's greatest guitarists but also was important as a composer. He played flamenco at a previously unimaginable level and created new techniques, opening up new possibilities for the solo instrument. He brought his art to concert halls and major theaters, making it available to all classes. Modern players such as Paco de Lucía, Tomatito, Serranito, René Heredia, Juan Manuel Cañizares, El Viejín, Vicente Amigo, Gerardo Nuñez, Javier Conde and many more acknowledge the great influence of Sabicas's music. * I am dedicating this performance to my wife Aida, an amazing photographer and visual artist, who is the biggest support to me.
