Fearless: I'm Not Afraid Of The Blank Page - Hints For The Entertainment Industry Artist - Tips # 3

The BLANK Page can be a scary thing for lots of creatives. It can create a block for any artist but there are ways around it. Let's say you got that one sheet of pristine cotton paper for your new watercolor gear, and it’s $$$. You fear making a mistake on that expensive paper, right? Maybe you just don't have any ideas of what to draw and the white of that bond cool white sheet of paper, that cost less that 1¢, is staring you down. The solution: put a simple pointless mark on the paper, anywhere. Just a tiny dot on the side will do the trick. all the sudden that scary paper is no longer in charge. It's not pristine. It no longer matters if you mess it up, now you can try to save the it from its potential future in the recycling bin. You can only make it better, and you haven't even started! You are the hero who’s going to save that sheet of paper from a gloomy future. It would be a pity to throw it out without even trying. Right?! Art, as a field, is already expensive as it is. Don't go spending buckets of money on expensive art supplies when you are starting out. Get familiar with some low to mid-range products. Soon enough you'll get familiar with tools, and you'll feel the need for specific supplies. If you’re drawing with a ball point pen on sheets of bond paper, and your drawing is not to your liking, or you make a horrible mistake, then who cares! I personally enjoy drawing on a stack of bond paper with a Bic pen, it feels like the pen runs fluidly on the paper. The paper is from a ream so there's always the next sheet. There's no pressure or concern in putting a mark on the page. Artists do gesture drawings on newsprint with charcoal because it's cheap. Who cares if the drawing is bad. Mind you, I've seen people do some fantastic work with charcoal on newsprint. You can always frame the work in a vacuum frame. You have 40 years or so, before the acids in the paper eats through the fibers and destroy the artwork. Yes, it will be costly to get that one piece framed but think about how much you saved on paper costs and worries. With the practice you got under your belt you can now take out that fancy paper and draw on it carelessly with a sure mark. I sometimes put a line on the right side of the paper if I'm bit paralyzed. It works two folds; I test the tip of the tool and it gets rid of the pristine sheet. That line will find its way into the page design. It won’t be an eye soar. Sometimes that first mark can be part of the background, it doesn't have to be the subject. You can also draw a light mark and erase it. And, if the page is a write-off, well it was a financial write-off when you bought it. Might as well use it. Paper is not like wine it doesn't get better with time. Use it. In the process you will learn something that will help you save the sheets to come. That paper has no personal feeling toward you. You’re not going to hurt it's feeling if you’re not at your best. You can always put the drawing aside and fix it next day. The sheet will gain character, history, and because you are truly searching for a solution the image will have character, the process will present its life story on the page. I've fixed drawings that I thought were lost once I was able to realize where the problem was. If you can't get designing. Draw a shape on the page put a couple of lines down, your creativity will take over and you'll start imagining things based on the brief for the design. Soon you'll have a rough idea on the page. Lightly erase the pencil work and refine the idea. Get a new page and change the camera angel, try a different shape. The design/creative process requires iterations. Do another pass, version up. At Pixar they call it "pulsing" your work. If nothing is working, and the paralysis is debilitating, get up and go for short walk, get some fresh air. Open a book of one of your favorite artists. I guarantee that within 5 min your hand will be hitching to draw, you'll be facing that white page fearlessly, and the marks will be pouring out of you.
