The most charming of the Russian waltzes, Orchid, was released by the St. Petersburg publishing house of Zimmermann in a luxurious art nouveau design. The author is Vasily Vasilyevich Andreev, the famous balalaika virtuoso (who also owned the piano art), the founder of the first orchestra of folk instruments in the Russian Empire. Andreev's European fame began in 1889, when the "Balalaika Lovers' Ensemble" created by him made a splash at the World Exhibition in Paris (the same one for which the Eiffel Tower was built). Visitors to the exhibition were amazed at the balalaika, a previously unprecedented musical miracle from Russia. The waltz "Orchid" was probably composed in 1900-1902, when Vasily Andreev was already an international celebrity. It would seem that a very simple melody has some incredible warmth, magically penetrating into the very heart.
