Ugandan President Idi Amin Marries for a Fifth Time | August 1975

Friday, August 1st 1975. Reuters Text: On Friday (1 August) in Kampala, President Idi Amin of Uganda was married for the fifth time. His nineteen year-old bride, Sarah, was his co-driver in a car rally held to celebrate the opening of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit in the Ugandan capital. The bride is also a member of the Revolutionary Suicide Mechanised unit of the Ugandan Army. For Field Marshal Amin who is a Muslim it was his fifth marriage. He has had one other wife -- Madina -- since last year when he announced he had separated from three other wives. The guests who attended a reception after the simple ceremony included Mr. Yasser Arafat, the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, president Siad Barre of Somalia, President Jaafar El-Nimeiry of the Sudan and other African leaders. President Amin introduced his new bride, dressed in white, to newsman before they cut a three tier cake. They used the President's sword. Source: Reuters News Archive. Note: 1. Both had performed a marraige ceremony before but Amin decided to rehash it to coincide with the end of the OAU conference. 2. Yasser Arafat was Amin's best man. 3. Other guests included Kenyan Vice-President Daniel arap Moi, 4. The bride met Amin when she was an 18-year-old go-go dancer in a band run by the aforementioned Revolutionary Suicide Mechanised Regiment. When she had a daughter by her then fiance on Christmas Day in 1974, Amin claimed the child as his own and ordered that the birth be announced on Ugandan TV. Her fiance was later "disappeared". She went on to have three children with Amin. 5. Sarah Amin divorced Amin during his time in exile after his overthrow by Tanzanian troops in 1979. She left Saudi Arabia for Germany where she claimed exile and in the 1990s was discovered to be running a cafe in East London. She also ran a hair salon. 6. She died of cancer in 2015
