Performance Coach Explains Simone Biles Case of the Twisties

In this GoRhody Podcast we are breaking down Simone Biles case of the Twisties with the help of our special guest sports mental performance coach Georgia Miller from Peak Performance Sports. Simone overcame a battle with the twisties which is a mental health block that pretty much shuts down an athlete’s performance in mid air. It happened as she was approaching her second flip in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Georgia defined the Twisties to our audience as a mental block where a gymnast loses sight of where they are at in space and ultimately do not know where they are going to land. What causes them? Not being fully committed to performing your routine or afraid of getting injured. Georgia says there is a physical side of them too and compares them to their counterparts in other sports which are called the Yips. Brand believes a break of routine like when Simone was performing in empty arenas during Covid may have caused the Twisties because then in the Tokyo Olympics where she had the Twisties she found herself in the ultimate stage - the Olympic Arena. Brand added that Simone’s main MO is performing the most difficult sequences which can add more areas of potential confusion. All it takes is one part being slightly off can cause the Twisties. Brand also believes since she had the Twisties before remnants can stay in her head and manifest at any moment. Georgia believes Simone benefited from the Twisties experience. Georgia talks about working with baseball players and golfers that had the Yips.Golfers can miss two foot putts and football long snappers struggle too. Georgia talks about how injuries play into a gymnast mindset. Georgia explains that in her profession she does not work with an athletes mental health. Brand talks about former Yankee Chuck Knoblauch who developed the Yips and couldn’t throw a straight ball to first base and shared his video. Brand asked Georgia if Basketball foul shooting can be considered part of the Yips. Do you also work with your clients in dealing with mental health issues? Simone did. She has ADHD. Georgia said that she mainly focuses on mental performance enhancement and she is not a licensed psychologist. What are some other forms of mental lapses in other sports? Yips in golf. Foul shooting in basketball. Chuck Knoblauch couldn’t throw to first. Yips. Brand talked about Rhode Island basketball’s foul shooting problems as a team and the coach thought it was becoming contagious and took on an identity of failure. 17:38 Georgia thinks every sports has the yips and she was working with a basketball player who couldn’t make his layups. A big part of the Yips is fear of failure. Is there a stigma against Simone? Georgia said yes because there is a lack of understanding among fans. Georgia said it is easy to feel confident when you are playing well but different when you are not. Also athletes are viewed as weak if you seek mental health. Georgia said if you have an injury you won’t wait to get help so why is mental counseling viewed differently. Brand talks about Simone’s bought with the Twisties and how she helped the sport. Before Simone the Twisties was uttered in hushed tones. Simone said she wanted the Twisties to happen because it made her a stronger person and helped others. Simone took a step back from the Twisties. Georgia agreed and believes one should go back to basics. The podcast included exclusive video of a Simone Biles instagram post showing her falling on her back to show that she wasn’t infallible that she later took down. Brand talks about the dangers of overthinking for athletes. Georgia adds about the exercise where you have a 👿 Devil and Angel on your shoulders. Brand remarked that is astonishing that Simone is a GOAT at the mature age of 26 when most of her peers retire. Georgia believes she has inspired so many other gymnasts to continue when they approach their mid 20’s. Georgia explained the physical reasons why younger gymnasts generally outperform older ones. I wanted to talk about Gage Dwyers case of the Twisties that didn’t end well for him. Benefits of Mental Rehearsal Mental Rehearsal involves visualizing yourself doing successful things which is a great mental warmup for an athlete like Simone. Brand started talking about a former gymnastic prospect named Gage Dwyers who was eying a spot on the Olympic Gymnastic team. Gage was only 21 and was eyeing a NCAA champion. Out of nowhere his skills vanished. He didn’t tell his coach about he simply stopped doing some of the stuff he was doing. To this day he still does not know what happened. Out of nowhere he couldn’t do a double back flip anymore. He moved to Florida and works for the Lion King show at Walt Disney World. Biles candidness has made it safer to talk about it.
