The chords have such a lovely, rich harmony and can be used as a substitution for any dominant chord since it resolves perfectly to the 5th below. They are used extensively in jazz and they consist of the 3rd, 7th and then every other chord tone is altered in some way; either sharpened or flattened. There are multiple ways to play an altered dominant and there are an infinite amount of voicings that can be used. These will work very well in a 251 replacing the dominant chord.
