Stan Grant Makes Passionate Speech At GQ Men of the Year Awards

Journalist Stan Grant has been announced As GQ Agenda Setter Of The Year at the Australian award ceremony in Sydney. The past 12 months have seen this broadcaster and journalist show an unwavering ability to drive necessary public discourse on a topic the Australian media too often neglect – Aboriginality. On the back of a powerful speech delivered to the Ethic Centre's – dubbed our ‘Martin Luther King moment' – he’s gone on to call out the cloak of racism that’s sadly worn by too many, questioning the so-called Australian dream and what that means to him, a proud Wiradjuri man, to the wider Aboriginal community and the country as a whole. Tireless in seeking change and a more open and visible conversation – Grant’s various posts across a variety of media are impassioned and ever necessary. Accepting his award, Grant said: "It's an honour to be here. I spent half of my working life overseas reporting the great stories of the world. I saw the rise of terrorism in the Middle East. The surge of China. The return of populism. I saw division. I then came back to my country a couple of years ago and saw that we too are divided in our own country. We saw that with the booing of Adam Goodes. And I thought - is this really us? Because in Australia - 10 year old girls commit suicide. Indigenous youth make up half of juvenile incarceration rates. Indigenous Australians die ten years earlier. And I can't believe that this is who we are - a country as wealthy, as prosperous, a country that's allowed me to pursue my dreams - that this is what we are. People are retreating to old divisions. We've seen this with the return of Donald Trump. Barack Obama said we have to stop the us and them. We have to see ourselves in each other. And I think we have a better chance of doing that in Australia than anywhere else."
