Model Rockets: Two Level 1 certification flights and one attempt on the Memorial Day weekend

Aloun Farms is letting us use their bigger field, so we can do certification flights. Two students and one teacher from Iolani participated along with UH Manoa students. We wanted a smaller crowd at the initial launch. We were expecting the fields to be unmanned on Sunday but were working because of the Monday holiday. The field workers were at least 100ft away and eventually moved to the far end of the field. The launch pads are 400m to the ravine and 1500m from the major roads so perfect for HPR. Next August will be at the pumpkin festival grounds again then back to Kunia around November, hopefully for more cert flights. I launched one HPR and two MPR which worked spectacularly. The only glitch is that the screamer only worked with the Mega Max. The elastic shock cord on the Eradicator and Strong Arm didn't have enough yank to pull the pin out of the screamers. The Blue Thunder propellent is extremely fast off the rail but about the same impulse as the H128. You can hear a whistle (more like a whoo) for a brief second after launch. I knew the winds would pick up later in the morning so launched the Strong Arm with a moderate F67. With the Eradicator, I was able to angle the ground cam away from the wind and let it fall over from the exhaust. Sorry about saying 300ft several times. People were starting to panic that the chute wasn't opening. What does the Eradicator eradicate? boredom of course... Mission accomplished! It appears that Mr. Butler's rocket had too much drag with the double fins causing the rocket to arc over and eject about 50ft from the ground. The rocket separated into two 2ft sections and landed in 3ft tall grass making it treacherous to retrieve without the chute attached. Fortunately, they retrieved the JLCR but lost the motor case. Josh and Micah's rockets were easier to retrieve because they had the chute attached. An Iolani staff, Martin did a honorary job forging through the thickets to retrieve both rockets for their Level 1 certs. 0:00 Der Teal Mega Max H238-6 7pts 1:44 Flight video 882 ft 3:14 Eradicator G77-7R 6pts 4:54 Flight video 1175ft 7:18 Strong Arm F67-6W 6pts 8:16 Flight video 643ft 9:40 Josh Polaris-3 E16-4 10:30 Micah EXO F50-6 11:36 Mr. Butler Level 1 attempt, Orange Julius H128-8 12:50 Dr. Hudson Initiator G80-4 13:46 Clarence Science Kit & Glider B6-6 13:56 Josh Level 1 cert flight, Juggernaut H128-9 2192ft 15:24 Dr. Hudson MAV C6-5 15:42 Gavin Mega Max G80-6 16:14 Christopher Bandit A10-3T 4pts 17:01 Micah Level 1 cert flight, EXO H128-10 1936ft Total 23pts + 20 bonus = 43pts
