Abandoned buildings and trains at Jefferson Proving Grounds. 3rd largest military base in the world! Exploring the maze of railroad sidings full of railroad cars and exploring the abandoned buildings and ammunition storage bunkers built under ground. Madison Railroad uses the railroad spurs and sidings to store hundreds of railroad cars that are not needed. There are also a couple of old abandoned locomotives. Jefferson Proving Ground is just north of Madison Indiana and has 56,000 acres. Established in 1941 and used by the military to test ammunition and explosives, the base closed in 1995. Part of it is still used by the military and the rest is park land and privately owned. People actually live in some of these buildings. The explosives have created an environmental hazard and there are areas of unexploded bombs. The US Army gave property owners 30 - 90 days to evacuate their property when they first constructed this base. Today there are a few private businesses here and the short line railroad Madison Railroad has an office and building where they are currently working on 2 locomotives. They have a caboose, a restored passenger car, other diesel locomotives and they store hundreds and hundreds of railroad cars for their owners. This video shows all of that and an 8 track public railroad crossing. I was also here when Madison Railroad had to retrieve 2 stored tank cars for their owner and I filmed them taking the cars to the CSX interchange at North Vernon, Indiana. I posted one video of that with a longer one that will be posted soon. I talked to the railroad officials at their office on the base and was told that they are working on the 2 locomotives in the building and they are currently installing new railroad ties and cutting back trees along the maze of tracks. They also told me that some of the equipment that they use on their annual Christmas trains are stored here. Trains only run here as needed with MWF being the most common days of operation.
