Five million people live in Sydney, but the place is really all about its geography: drowned river valleys, eroded headlands, shifting sand loads, and a sunrise over the ocean. That last one is what gives Sydney surf its distinct light and color. You might call it “backlit”, but the term doesn’t quite capture how a morning wave in Sydney can appear to hold sun, wind and cloud within itself. Even on dark days the water can seem luminous.
