AUSTRALIA'S MOST CHALLENGING HIKE: The Western Arthurs Traverse in 4K

The Western Arthurs Traverse in Tasmania is often regarded as the most challenging hike in Australia - and rightfully so. This 80km trek across the Western Arthur Range will have you slogging through knee-deep mud and scrambling up and down exposed rock walls. Aside from its rugged and often unmarked trails, the Western Arthurs earns its reputation due to its isolation and rapidly changing weather systems; often receiving layers of snow during the summer months. Sound trekking experience and preparation is recommended for hiking the Western Arthurs Traverse. Trekking gear including a personal locator beacon (PLB), hiking boots with good grip, and 10 metres of rope for pack hauling are also highly advisable. During our visit, the bushfire-affected tracks east of Kappa Moraine were closed, so we trekked the slightly condensed Alpha to Kappa (A to K) route (50km).
