Soil Health in Georgia: Soil Health in a Cotton and Peanut Rotation

The Soil Health Institute (SHI), the non-profit charged with safeguarding and enhancing the vitality and productivity of soils, invites you to watch this replay of the Georgia Healthy Soil Farmer Showcase. In this virtual episode, “Soil Health in a Cotton and Peanut Rotation,” Peyton Sapp, Burke Co., Georgia County Extension Coordinator, leads a discussion with four local farmers on how they incorporate soil health practices in a rotation that includes cotton and peanuts. Gaines Story, a farmer from Burke Co., talks about his experience successfully overseeding cover crops after peanut and before digging. With over 10 years of experience, Burton Heatwole shares his successes and challenges in planting and managing multi-species cover crops. While “planting green” is a topic of contention, Rocky Yelton, a farmer from Burke Co., explains why he did it last year and will continue to do so in the future. In addition, Peyton Sapp presents preliminary results from the long-term soil health study at the SE Georgia Research and Education Center near Midville, GA. The study examines four different systems using cover crops, reduced tillage, and a corn-cotton-peanut rotation. The showcase concludes with Dr. Archie Flanders, SHI Ag Economist, sharing the results of an economic evaluation on Burton Heatwole’s farm.
