Awakenings

A song about how struggle and hardship can shape who we become. The opening features a melody and counter-melody played by bassoon and flute, while the orchestra's gentle accompaniment evokes a mixture of sombre and hopeful emotions. At 1:29 attention is drawn to a solo cello playing a mournful melody until 3:27 when the orchestra builds into an unsettling crescendo. The feeling of calamity builds as trumpet and french horn trade musical phrases, eventually intertwining with the the rest of the brass and strings. At 5:49 the orchestra comes crashing down until there is only silence. A lonely flute breaks the silence at 6:00, echoing a similar turn near the end of the song "Tiny Dragon". Then, pizzicato cello and bass moves the piece forward while the rest of the string section, accented by glockenspiel, finish the song by repeating the melody introduced earlier by the solo cello.
