David Alden’s production for the Bavarian State Opera, designed by Paul Steinberg and Buki Schiff, took up the gauntlet thrown down by Handel with the razzle-dazzle of his London première and succeeded magnificently in inventing a similarly explosive Rinaldo. A superb cast features countertenors David Daniels and David Walker, and soprano Noëmi Nadelmann.
