Guitarist was CRUSHED When His Band REJECTED Song…Rival Singer Made it a #1 Hit! | Professor of Rock

Coming up. Today’s guitarist Mike Campbell was elated. He thought he’d written the best song of his career, The Boys of Summer. He was over the moon to show it to his band The Heartbreakers and their legendary singer Tom Petty. When Mike brought it in to show Tom and their producer, Jimmy Iovine. They both passed on it. They didn’t hear. it. Mike Campbell was crushed. Jimmy Iovine felt bad so he set this guitarist up with another legendary singer who need songs for his new album... Don Henley. The next day when Mike played it for him, Don too seemed indifferent to the song. He walked out of his house without saying a word. Mike was again CRUSHED. But about an hour later he got a call from Henley who said I think I’ve just written the best song of my career! Up next an interview with Mike Campbell on The Boys of Summer... the song that became the biggest hit of his career, that was rejected by the band he’s known for, and etched in stone by a rival singer! Today we have something very special for you. I was extremely fortunate to sit down for an in-depth interview with rock and roll hall of famer and cowriter, producer and guitarist with Tom Petty and the heartbreakers and the lead singer of his own band the dirty knobs the great Mike Campbell. One day Mike wrote a song that he felt was maybe the best song he’d ever written. He was elated to show it to Tom Petty for the Heartbreakers new album Southern accents that they were working on with mega producer Jimmy Iovine. He was shocked with both Tom and Jimmy shot the song down. They didn’t think it worked for their album. They didn’t hear it. Mike was pretty much devastated… Jimmy mentioned to Mike that the song might work for another legendary singer who was working on his sophomore solo offering. So let me set that up: After the Eagles broke up in 1980 Don Henley went solo. He released I Cant Stand Still in late 81 pushed forward by his brilliant hit Dirty Laundry. As He prepared to release his second album Building The Perfect Beast he was looking for a killer song. So the next day Jimmy set up a meeting between Mike Campbell and Don Henley. Mike played Don his song and to his surprise, Don seemed to have the same reaction Tom Petty had days before…He was indifferent to it. Don Henley left Mike’s house and once again Mike was perplexed. Was he losing his musical intuition? Well about an hour later, Mike’s phone rang… Remember this was in the early 80s no cell phones. So Mike picked up… it was Don Henley he said Mike I think I just wrote the best song of my career! Get the whole story from my interview with Mike Next.
