Buzzy John's Blues (Marimba & Vibraphone Duet)

This is definitely one of my oldest jazz compositions - it's probably one of the first 5 songs I ever wrote. It was composed back in 2001 while I was at Manhattan School of Music. Sheet music available here - your support really helps :) https://www.timcollinsmusic.com/produ... Check out my new jazz vibraphone course! https://www.timcollinsmusic.com/courses/ The song is a an AABA blues form that has a Cuban influenced bridge, combine with some meter changes and a twisty turnaround at the end of the blues form. As I remember, I think the piece was largely inspired by Chick Corea's "Steps" on the album "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs". The melody is very pentatonic, but then has some "out"-ish bebop lines in it. The first ever performance of this song was actually at my graduation recital in 2002 - and it featured some incredible musicians: Ayako Shirasaki (piano), Miles Brown (bass), and Obed Calvaire (drums). I actually have video of this concert, and as soon as I can get back to NY and transfer it from a digital video tape I will put some clips of it online. Later in 2006 I recorded this piece on my first studio album "Valcour", which featured Aaron Parks (piano), Matt Clohesy (bass), and Simon Lott (drums). Aaron's solo on this tune was particularly mind blowing - check it out here:    • Tim Collins 'Buzzy John's Blues' feat...   Then when I moved to Europe in 2009 I was sitting around at home (similar to what we are all doing in 2020!) and trying to find creative outlets. The wonderful marimbist Emiko Thiele-Uchiyama was living in Salzburg at the time and asked me to write some jazzy arrangements for marimba/vibes duo. This song, "Buzzy John's Blues" was one of them. Fast forward to 2020, and I had forgotten about the arrangement until I was doing a clinic in Austria for music teachers, and one of the participants told me that some of his students were working on this arrangement. I was flattered, and asked to hear a recording when they were finished. They did a good job! So then I became inspired to update the arrangement a little bit - I made it fit on a 4.3 marimba since that's all I have access to easily - and I recorded the parts myself for this video! The process was more difficult than usual, since I am used to improvising most of my performances.. sticking to written parts required gasp actual disciplined practice (NO!!!). But thankfully my music school training days are still somewhere in my bones and I got it done. 1. Recorded the marimba part using the Zoom H4. I actually practiced for about an hour or so on the marimba before I bothered recording anything... once I did, I made EIGHT takes. The final version is made up of MOSTLY take 8, with some stuff borrowed from Take 5 because of stupid missed notes. 2. About three days later I recorded the vibes part using the Rode M5 mics. This was much easier because I have vibes at home and can just practice all day one day, and then record the next. I did 5 takes on vibraphone, and ended up using take 5 - pretty much in it's entirety. I overdubbed one chord (can you spot it in the video?? hehe) 3. TRANSCRIBING THE SOLOS.... The original arrangement had some written solos that were pretty good, but I wanted to improvise them both again. Actually the solos were good on all of the takes, so I will release the alternate takes to people who buy the sheet music (perks, yay!). 4. Mixing the audio, editing the video. Another 12 hours of work and this baby was DONE! As always, I hope you enjoy these videos.
