South Korea and UK co-host Seoul meeting to discuss AI safety and governance

(22 May 2024) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Seoul, South Korea - 22 May 2024 1. Various of AI Global Forum ministerial level session, co-hosted by South Korean Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong Ho, and British Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Michelle Donelan STORYLINE: South Korean and British science ministers co-hosted a ministerial-level meeting during AI Global Forum in Seoul to discuss AI safety, innovation and inclusivity. The meeting was a part of the two-day long AI Seoul Summit. On the first day of the summit, world leaders met for a virtual meeting and adopted the Seoul Declaration, which promotes AI safety, innovation and inclusivity. The meeting is a follow-up to the UK's AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in November and comes amid a flurry of efforts by governments and global bodies to design guardrails for the technology amid fears about the potential risk it poses both to everyday life and to humanity. Leaders from 10 countries and the European Union will “forge a common understanding of AI safety and align their work on AI research,” the British government, which co-hosted the event, said in a statement. The meeting has been dubbed a mini virtual summit, serving as an interim meeting until a full-fledged in-person edition that France has pledged to hold.
