EVITA ORIGINS Julie Covington to Elaine Paige

This small clip explains the origins of the Evita concept album featuring Julie Covington as Eva, Colm Wilkonson as Che (1976) up to the world premiere of the original production starring Elaine Paige, David Essex (the only Che to my knowledge to be first billed) and Joss Ackland. Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Lyrics by Tim Rice, Directed by Hal Prince. The political atmosphere in which Evita was conceived in Britain is a great factor as to why Evita wasn't warmly received in America. The concept album went nowhere and the American reviews weren't particularly kind. Whilst it went on to be a success, something was lost in the transfer. It can be argued that the production became a lot tighter on it's transfer to Broadway, but it lost the edge of the concept album and the the altered (for the better) stage production in London. I don't think the original could ever be recaptured though. If the original cast had made the transfer to Broadway, I wonder how the critics would have reacted to a British cast. uploaded for archival, historical and educational purposes only.
