I see players of all abilities spending quite a long time fiddling around and getting frustrated with the process of getting the reed on the mouthpiece or having to adjust it. Over years of playing i've picked up a method of how to do this really quickly and easily to get rid of all that fiddling and frustration. In a previous video i showed you how to position your reed pefectly and fine tune it to help you get the sound you're looking for and i'll post a link to that video in the description. But i thought a good follow up to that would be to show you this handy little technique. Now since starting to keep my reeds wet, which i talked about in another recent video linked in the description, i put my reed on and back off again every time i play, never leaving it on the mouthpiece if unnatended. SO i'm really glad of having this method i use. Let me know in the comments if this process is something you find annoying and a bit frustrating sometimes and i'd also love to hear if the method i show you now works for you! SO it's really simple and there's just 3 things you need to remember. 1. A nice loose ligature 2 wet the base 3 Use your thumbs! Alright so basics, if you don't keep your reeds wet like me, soak your reed or wet it with saliva by holding it in your mouth for a moment. perhaps while your putting the rest of your saxophone together or getting your music out or something. I hold my reed with my mouth while i do this next step so imagine that Now take your mouthpiece and ligature, and loosen the ligature so it's really loose. and leave it on the mouthpiece. Now dampen the base of the reed with a quick lick, this helps create a tight seal and stops the reed from moving around so much. It basically sticks the reed to the table of the mouthpiece a bit. Insert the reed. Doing it this way protects the delicate thin tip. Which can easily get nicked if we're in a hurry or just don't concentrate for a second. And we all know how frustrating it is if you ruin a good reed. Ignore the ligature for a moment, and line the reed up perfectly like we discussed in that previous video, now use your thumb! Hold it firmly in place, only on the thick bit, too near the tip and you'll crack the reed. Now you're holding the mouthpiece and reed with one hand, the reeds in the right place and the reed can't move around. So all we do now is get the ligature in the right position which is easy because it's nice and loose. And then tighten it up. Make sure the ligature is holding the reed on the unfinished surface. Moving it forwards or backwards can affect yor tone and you're welcome to experiment with what effect that has for you. So thats quite a long explanation of a simple time saving technique. Let me do it without talking so you can see how quick and easy it is. It might take you a bit of practice to get it a smooth quick process but give it a try and i think it could save you some time and frustration and reduce the amount of fiddling you have to do. Everyone does things differently and i bet some of you have equally good methods of putting your reeds on without the fiddling. I'd love to hear about them or if this method is helpful to you let me know in the comments.
