Is John Adairs three-circle model of Action-Centred Leadership out dated? I ask Simon Mann his opinion on this model from the UKs most widely authority on leadership and leadership development in organisations. Mann met Adair when he was at Sandhurst and John Adair became senior lecturer in Military History, and Leadership Training Adviser at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Adair firmly believes that leadership can be taught, that it does not depend on a person's traits and that it is a transferable skill. In this video I ask Simon Mann, ex-SAS leader, to tell us how he used the three-circles model to lead through change and adversity with purpose in a very practical way. Leadership can be taught and learned, and applied simply and effectively to great effect. If, as leader, you are struggling with a problem, watch this video and think about the model can help you. Why is John Adiars action centred leadership model so good? Adair's ideas remain popular because they are practical and relevant to managers irrespective of working environment, and his works have been instrumental in overturning the 'Great Man' theories of leadership. I believe Adair’s action learning model can help us remobilise our staff by giving a better more balanced plan, and help engage the creativity and knowledge that exists people and teams. What is the action centred leadership model? The three circles, forming a venn diagram, simply attend to three areas of need: Team, Task and Individual. The model seems to stand the test of time well, probably because it is the fundamental model for describing what leaders have to do, the actions they must take whatever their working environment, in order to be effective in: Achieve the task, Build and maintain the team, Develop the individual Is the model out dated, you decide. To hear our thoughts on action centred leadership, watch this video, we hope it will reintroduce many of you to the power and simplicity of the three circles model and help you lead your business into the new environment.
