Christopher Paolini Discusses When He Will Return to Alagaësia

Christopher answers one of the fans' most asked questions: with so many loose ends left following the conclusion of the Inheritance Cycle, will he write another book set in Eragon's world? Transcript: Okay, the question everyone keeps asking: when am I going to return to the land of Alagaësia and answer all of those questions I didn’t answer in book four, Inheritance? That’s a tricky question. On one hand, I could write books for the rest of my life in Alagaësia and I could be very happy doing that. In fact, the number of ideas I have for stories in Alagaësia, just at the moment, would probably take me thirty years to write. I do plan on returning to Alagaësia, at some point. I spent so much time and effort creating the world that to walk away from it forever would…is sort of impossible. I care about the characters too much, I care about the land, and there are things I still want to do in the world, places I want to visit, stories I want to tell. And I did, I left a number of loose ends hanging in book four, on purpose, and I have a very specific story in mind that will resolve those. In previous interviews, I’ve referred to this book as “book five,” which I think is appropriate because even though it does not continue the story of the Inheritance Cycle, it draws off many of the same themes and has many of the same characters. As to when I’m going to write this hypothetical book five, which, by the way, I do have a title for it. I just can’t tell you it yet. As to when I’m going to write it, that really just depends on how fast I’m able to write the other projects I want to do first. At the moment, I’m working on a science fiction book and that’s my priority. So long term…I can’t give you an exact date. It’s going to be as soon as possible because, just like you, I do miss Eragon, I do miss Saphira, and I want to see what happens.
