Neil Young vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd | Music's Greatest Mysteries

When Lynyrd Skynyrd released "Sweet Home Alabama", was it really a diss track towards Neil Young? In the 1970s, Neil Young started writing protest songs against the south including "Southern Man" and "Alabama" with the lyrics "Now your crosses are burning fast, Southern man" and other lyrics pointing out racism in the South, slaveowners, and the KKK. Many Southerns were outraged by the lyrics and one band decided to fight back. Frontman Ronnie Van Zant decided to escalate the beef by responding to Neil Young with what may be the most famous diss track of all time. They fired back with the Southern rock anthem, "Sweet Home Alabama" and an entire verse pointed at Neil Young. The lyrics were "Well I hope Neil Young will remember a southern man don't need him around anyhow". But was the hatred real or just for show and inspiration? We take a loot at the rivalry on Music's Greatest Mysteries.
