Back to Back | 2023 Colorado Archery Elk Public Land OTC 9/15/23 Claytons Bull 9/17/23 Calebs Bull What a crazy year up at hunting camp! one of the best years yet, with non stop action! 9/15 Clayton was able to harvest his first bull elk with a bow at 30 yards. Self called, self filmed, and self recovered all solo. Claytons words, " I was hiking a ridge above some steep downfall, where I called in two smaller bulls the previous day. I stopped at the top of the ridge to take a breather and glass. I looked into the timber below me and spotted a dead head. As I dropped down to grab it, I heard a bull bugle across from the timber I was dropping into. I closed the distance to the bull, where the the two draws met, and I did a cow estrus call. The bull bugled hard. I knocked an arrow, checked the wind, and waited patiently. I saw the bull running towards me, jumping over deadfall trees. He bugled one more time, turned broadside as he was looking for a cow call and I released an arrow that did a complete pass through his heart. He ran downhill 50 yards, I cow called, and I heard him crash and expire within minutes. I'm super thankful my friends helped me pack him out til 2:30 am. Such a crazy experience that I'll never forget. Super thankful I'm able to hunt on public land. Thank you mother nature for a lot of meat this year. Very happy I could harvest a bull elk and mule deer buck with my bow. Already can't wait til next year. I got the entire hunt on film too! Can't wait to share it." 9/17 We were super tired from packing out clayton's bull, but decided to go for a morning hunt. We did a loop we had previously done earlier in season. We cow called and bugled with no response. We pushed up to cut back to a logging road that led to the truck. We created the ridge and I spotted a legal bull rushing down towards our call cows. Caleb got setup, Shawna was behind filming, and clayton cow called the bull into 30 yards. Caleb made an outstanding crouched shot, and the bull ran within 100 yards and tipped over! It was a crazy hunt that we will never forget. We got it all on film as well!Thanks to all who helped. Super blessed!
