KOHLER Governor Adjustment, Vertical Twin Cylinder Models CV, ECV, SV, KT, ZT

This video illustrates the static governor adjustment for KOHLER vertical crankshaft twin cylinder models CV, ECV, SV, KT, and ZT. Before working on engine or equipment, disable the engine as follows: 1) Disconnect spark plug lead(s). 2) Disconnect negative (-) battery cable from battery. Disable the engine    • STEP 1: Disable the Engine   TIPS: 1) Make sure the throttle is wide open and held against the throttle stop when this adjustment is performed. 2) Don't hold the governor cross shaft against the stop while tightening the nut-this often results in preloading the governor components and causes speed instability (hunting/surging). If the adjustment is too loose and sloppy, the engine will overspeed. 3) Make sure you're turning the cross shaft the right way when making the adjustment; counterclockwise on the engines listed here, but may be clockwise on other engines. Check the service manual if in doubt. 4) Don't overtighten the nut. Doing so can result in the governor lever no longer holding the governor shaft...it will slip and lose adjustment...and replacing the lever and hardware will be required to repair. Engine controls and other variables may affect access to the governor lever and cross shaft. In other words, your engine may look different and these components may be difficult to access depending on the application, but the adjustment process is the same. If in doubt, please refer to the KOHLER Service Manual for your engine. This adjustment should be performed whenever the governor components have been disassembled, such as the cross shaft, closure plate, governor gear, governor lever removal, etc. Otherwise, periodic adjustment of the governor and related components is not necessary. If your engine cannot maintain a steady speed and surges (hunts), this adjustment should be checked. Keep in mind, the main cause of a surge and unstable engine speed is a running fault, specifically anything that causes the air fuel ratio to become too lean, like a restricted or dirty carburetor, specifically the low speed/idle jet circuits.
