The Markbass CMB 121 Black Line combo is the first entry-level amp from Italy’s “Ferrari” of bass-amp innovation. The CMB 121 strives to offer exquisite sound to students and beginners with 150 watts, a single 12" speaker, 4-band EQ, Scooped and Boost switches, an Aux input, headphone output, balanced XLR output and an effects send/return for pedals, pedalboards and multi-effects devices. “For the size, this amp has a really nice tone,” says Fütterer, a Los Angeles composer/producer who makes music as All Made Up and also tours with Weyes Blood and Mayer Hawthrone. “A cool feature is the Scooped switch, which can come in handy when you need an extra bit of brightness to cut through a mix—especially if you’re playing a warm bass or using flatwound strings. Likewise, the Boost switch is helpful when you want to better showcase a solo.” At 35lbs., the Markbass CMB 121 is reasonably easy to transport to bass lessons, jam sessions and band practices. The CMB 121 also includes Gain and Master Volume controls for playing hard-hitting, gritty bass lines at low volumes that won’t get your home practice given a time out.
