Well, when Square Enix reached out to me and asked if I was interested in doing a cover of the Main Theme from Octopath Traveler II, I said “uh, yes!” The original Octopath Traveler is one of my greatest inspirations for JRPG-style video game music. The score feels so much like classic RPGs, but realized with modern recording technology and live players. Of course, the game is great too! I knew that a piece this complex and layered would need a large ensemble to capture all the layers, so I decided to write out this arrangement for big band! The first half of this arrangement feels like a more modern big band arrangement that has a bit of influence of orchestral music, but by the time we get to the second half, the swing kicks in, and it feels like a good ol’ burnin’ big band chart! I had a lot of fun recording all the horns for this project! I’ve been spending quite a bit of time working on my brass playing since choosing to stop making YouTube videos regularly, and I think it shows in this video!
