Jane Austen PERSUASION | How are the Musgroves introduced? What is prosopopoeic ekphrasis?

How are we introduced to the Musgroves in Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion (1818)? Anne Elliot and Mary Musgrove walk over to the Great House in Uppercross to visit the Musgroves, where the reader meets the characters. But before we meet the Musgroves in person, we are told how their portrait paintings react to the ‘alteration’ and ‘improvement’ of the modern generation. In this lecture, I argue that Jane Austen uses prosopopoeic ekphrasis to introduce us to the Musgrove family. In this video, I: o Analyse the passage from Jane Austen’s Persuasion (1818): “Oh! could the originals of the portraits against the wainscot, could the gentlemen in brown velvet and the ladies in blue satin have seen what was going on, have been conscious of such an overthrow of all order and neatness! The portraits themselves seemed to be staring in astonishment.
