As the Loyalton Fire exploded to the north, the Lake Fire burning in Angeles National Forest also flared up, producing a pyrocumulonimbus cloud with frequent negative CG lightning. Wildfires generate a lot of heat and moisture due to combustion of vegetation, which creates lift to form a thunderstorm under the right conditions. These firestorms can generate lightning that starts new fires downwind.
