Salting-Out Soap Scraps, part 2 -- salting out

Scraps from handcrafted soap making are often recycled by rebatching -- heating the scraps, blending them with a bit of extra liquid, perhaps adding fragrance and other additives, and putting the melted mixture into a mold. This tutorial presents an alternative -- how to clean up and reuse soap scraps using a "salting out" process adapted from traditional "boiled" soap making. Unlike rebatching, salting-out can lighten soap that is overly dark colored, remove unwanted additives such as pumice or oatmeal, and remove unpleasant fragrances. Once the soap has been cleaned up, it can be scented and colored again. If the melted soap is also cooked with a bit of lye, some or all of the superfat in the scraps can be removed. I don't claim salting-out is the next new, easy, and amazing way to deal with scraps, but I invite you to learn more about it!
