Marcus Aurelius was the final well-known Stoic philosopher of antiquity. In addition, he was the final of what English historian Edward Gibbon dubbed the "Five Good Emperors" of Rome in the eighteenth century. Marcus was born in 121 CE into a prosperous patrician family in Rome. He passed away in 180 CE from a communicable disease, most likely the Antonine Plague, which was named for his imperial dynasty. Marcus started studying philosophy at the extraordinarily young age of twelve, and he soon gave his whole life to stoicism. Marcus gained widespread recognition from his roles as Sir Alec Guinness in the 1964 film The Fall of the Roman Empire and Richard Harris in the 2000 blockbuster Gladiator directed by Ridley Scott.
