Dream Guitars - Al Petteway - C-Tuning/Broken Mist

"The first time I saw someone use a C tuning was when I gave a workshop with Martin Simpson in a little music store in Alexandria, VA back in the early 1990’s. He was playing a version of an old time banjo tune on guitar with the root on the fifth string (G). When he hit that low C note for the IV chord, it ran shivers down my spine. It’s a very satisfying tuning for me because I can play chords and melodies without necessarily having the theory interfere with the creative process, although knowing that one can easily play in the key of G or in the key of C is a helpful starting point. I love the mystery of open tunings for that reason. I often put my guitar in this type of tuning when I want to explore new musical ideas with an open mind, kind of like stream of consciousness playing. It’s easy to play in major or minor modes and funky bass lines fall right under the fingers. It works best on a guitar that is strung with medium gauge strings or has a longer scale length to give it more tension, especially on the low strings. A shorter scale guitar with light gauge strings can work if the action is raised up a bit. It’s a great escape and I highly recommend it." -Al Petteway - Be sure to check out Al's full performance of 'Broken Mist' on the Dream Guitars YouTube channel while you're here - you'll find a link to it toward the end of this video. The original recording of 'Broken Mist' is available on Al's CD "The Waters and the Wild", and other examples of this tuning, C-G-C-G-C-D (sometimes referred to as C9 tuning), can be heard on his recent CD "Mountain Guitar"! Have fun and thanks for watching!
