Experiencing Filipino Hospitality: How the other half survive in Pagadian, Mindanao, Philippines

Is Mindanao a safe place to live and travel for foreigners? Like most countries there's a significant difference between the social classes and how people struggle to survive in the Philippines. I’d been in Pagadian for a few days and had been invited to go to Tukuran, a coastal town 20km from Pagadian city. I’d been chatting online with Kristine who lived in Pagadian, but she was staying at her Auntie’s in Tukuran and wanted me to come and visit her there. Filipinos are very hospitable. It was quite unnerving that after I’d arrived - instantly half the town came out to see what a big nosed foreigner looked like in the flesh. Kristine’s father and uncle are both fishermen. Her Auntie had invited me to their home to taste the fish that Kristine’s father had caught and marinated for me. Sadly I was unable to converse with the men as they spoke little English but we bonded over the Red Horse I’d brought with me which they tended to down quickly as shooters and Karaoke. Unfortunately you can’t hear me murder the Psychedelic Furs “Ghost in You” due to copyright issues. Or other songs we crucified. Sometimes YouTube didn’t recognise the songs we were trying to sing, so some snippets managed to slip through. Although Hey Jude was identified as Moi Ban, whatever that is and I’ve had to delete most of it. Thankfully! This afternoon must rank amongst my top 5 most enjoyable afternoons in the Philippines. Mainly involving singing karaoke and drinking. If you’ve been watching my videos for awhile you’ll have seen me also murdering Hey Jude on a beach in Anda, Bohol when I joined a group of youngsters celebrating their day off from work singing songs and drinking. It’s true what they say sometimes in the Philippines that age doesn’t matter. I was passing by and they invited me to join them. This wouldn’t happen in the west. I’d be told in no uncertain terms to Naff off Grandpa, but filipinos are very respectful of old codgers and will happily give you time of day and share their alcohol. I departed Tukuran uplifted, with joy in my heart. Even the heavy rain on heading back to Pagadian couldn’t dampen my spirits. Kristine’s Auntie had said that I’m welcome to return to her home again anytime. Filipinos have big hearts embracing strangers into their community. This is the joy of travelling. You don’t know what each day will bring. Sure, some days are stressful and hard going. You just have to go with an open mind and open heart. And you will be find happiness. This is why I love living in the Philippines. How safe is travelling in Mindanao? There's so much bad publicity about this area of the Philippines called the Red Zone, that I thought I'd best go and explore the place myself. Have been in western Mindanao almost 3 weeks: spent 4 nights in Dipolog City, a place I'd wanted to come to for awhile, having been on my radar since I heard about its fabulous Boulevard; a sad night in Oroquieta City which had nothing to offer; 4 nights in Ozamiz City; 6 nights in Iligan; now in Pagadian city where I stayed for 4 nights. This was my first time visiting western Mindanao. I have previously taken a ferry from Camiguin to Cagayan De Oro, spent time in that city, before travelling on to Davao, spending 3 weeks in Davao over Christmas 2022. On the United Kingdom’s Foreign Travel Advice Website, they’ve virtually drawn a line down the middle of Mindanao depicting which are the safe places to travel to and those that are not so safe. The website states that there’s a high threat of kidnap in the Philippines, with foreign nationals targeted by both criminal and terrorist groups. The threat of kidnapping is particularly acute in Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago and offshore areas in the nearby waters of the Sulu Sea and Celebes Sea. A British national and a dual Filipino-British national were kidnapped on 4 October 2019 from a resort in Zamboanga, Western Mindanao. They were successfully rescued on 25 November 2019 by the Philippines Armed Forces. Some hostages however, including foreign nationals, have been murdered. Many foreigners/expats choose the Philippines as the best country to retire in Asia and live in paradise. The Philippines is one of the cheapest countries to live in the world with its low cost of living and all year sunshine. Retiring in the Philippines is affordable on a budget of less than $1000 per month. EQUIPMENT USED: Canon Sureshot G7X Mark II. GoPro HERO9 Black.
