Rebuilding Caterpillar 966D Dozer Transmission Due to Slow to Engage || Restoration Transmission

Discovering your dozer’s transmission is on the outs is not a great feeling. Here is a look at five common problems construction machine owners run into when the transmission is starting to go, what the likely culprit is, and what to look for. 1. TRANSMISSION SLOW TO ENGAGE This usually happens due to transmission pump issues or oil leaks. If it’s happening to you, check the oil levels, look for oil leaks, and tighten all clamps. If oil leaks don’t seem to be the problem, your dozer’s transmission pump likely needs to be repaired or replaced. 2. OVERHEATING First, make sure air flow isn’t restricted in the radiator or oil cooler. Airflow can become restricted by dirt and other debris. Next, check for oil leaks in the transmission clutch pack and torque converter. Overheating is often caused by clutch pack problems. 3. LOSS OF DRIVE AND HYDRAULICS This is usually caused by a flex plate problem. Inspect the engine to see if there is any debris that may be causing issues too. 4. ONLY ONE TRACK MOVES The root of this is almost always a broken plate in the clutch pack. 5. TRACKS NOT ENGAGING AT THE SAME TIME The side that takes longer to engage probably has an oil leak. Sometimes shaft oil control rings are the problem. There could also be a problem with seal rings.
