My beef is with the companies that simultaneously exploit cheap labor and have their workers using gasoline-powered blowers to further maximize profits by clearing as many yards as possible in an allotted time (as raking obviously takes much longer), at the expense of the healthy & safety of both their employees and society at large. Gas-powered leaf blowers are not allowed within 500 ft of residences, but because the gardener is under orders to clear the alley (which is no wider building-to-building than, maybe, 20 ft) he comes right up under windows and idles with the blower going. This is terrible for everyone’s air quality but especially bad for my partner who is asthmatic; and the person whose health is most severely impacted by these fumes (as well as by the noise pollution) is the worker himself, of course, as the motor is loudest and the fumes are strongest for him. So, yeah… suffice it to say, I HATE gas-powered leaf blowers. Electric models can also be very loud, but there’s something especially enraging about all that racket when the thing creating it is so profoundly shitty. And ofc these greedy companies and the landlords that hire them for their low prices don’t want to equip the workers with the safer (pricier) alternative, because it’s 2024 and maximizing profit margins by any means necessary is the M/O more than ever before. This is the hill I will die on.
