Improving Your Seat (with Kurt McNabb)

Today I'm working with my son, Kurt, and helping him improve his seat. This is an exercise I've done since I was just a kid, and I find it extremely helpful for developing the confidence and skill necessary to stay with the horse's movement. Kurt will be riding, but I will be on the ground directing the horse's movement. To make the exercise more challenging, you can: 1. remove the bridle, 2. hold a glass of water, 3. ride bareback. Common Mistakes: - Reaching the feet up too far toward the horse's forearms. This will naturally push the shoulders back and put you behind the movement. Ideally, you want a straight line from your shoulders, to your hips, to your ankles. - Having stirrups that are too short. Tips to Remember: - Work with a horse that you trust, and a person you trust. - Focus on your center for balance, and keep your eyes focused on the horse's ears to let you know where you're headed next. If his head goes down, he's stopping or turning. If his head goes up, he's about to move forward. - Have FUN - it'll help you relax. DETERMINATION In this exercise, especially as you increase the intensity, it is going to take some determination to stay in the saddle. Reaching any goal in life takes determination, because at some point, there will be discouragement standing in your way. Determination is what keeps you pressing in. I love having the opportunity to ride and train with my family. And I hope you enjoyed watching! Until next time, may God bless the trails you ride! - Ken McNabb
