The Return of Canadian Pacific 2816: Final Spike Steam Tour 2024 (4K)

On May 3rd, myself and a few friends would hit the road. Bound for the Midwest for the event of the year for Train Enthusiasts. The Final Spike Steam Tour, which was put on by the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Southern Railroad. The tour would be led by the Empress, Canadian Pacific #2816 currently the only Operational 4-6-4 Hudson type Steam Locomotive in North America. This would be the Empress's first public tour in over a decade after the Canadian Pacific Railway Steam Program was canceled, and the first time it has been in the United States since 2007. After driving 2 days to St. Paul, Minnesota we would join in the chase on Sunday May 6th, and chase it from Hastings Minnesota to May 9th to Davenport Iowa. Across the Midwest, from Minnesota to Wisconsin, to Illinois to Davenport, I would say we had a pretty successful chase over 4 days. Accompanying the Train, was the two Canadian Pacific F Units #1401 & #4106 which i feel fit the consist. It was great not only seeing the Empress for the first time, but chasing a Mainline Steam Tour for the first time since 2019. Timecodes in the video Day 1 Hastings MN to Wisconsin Dells WI 00:55 Day 2 Portage WI to Bensenville IL 8:55 Day 3 Display Day at Franklin Park 27:47 Day 4 Bensenville IL to Davenport IA 35:57 The Canadian Pacific 2816, is a 4-6-4 Hudson Type Steam locomotive, built by the Montreal Locomotive Works. She was preserved and purchased by F. Nelson Blunt and added to his Steamtown USA Collection. It stayed with the collection, and was moved to Scranton Pennsylvania to the current Steamtown National Historic Site. However in 1998 it was re-acquired by the Canadian Pacific Railway to undergo restoration to operation. It would debut in 2001 and operate in excursion service until E Hunter Harrison canceled the program in 2012. In 2004 I almost caught it twice. Had my family trip been to Toronto just a tad bit earlier I would have seen it. It also came to my hometown on a Ferry move to Chicago in 2004 which I didn't see pictures of till years later. In 2020, it was fired up for a Holiday Train video. Keith Creel made the claim if the Canadian Pacific & Kansas City Southern Merged he would run the engine down to Mexico. A rebuild was performed and the engine returned to Steam in 2023 and ran various test runs. I hope to see the engine again in the future. As for this year, it is looking like I will be heading down to Tennessee to chase #630 and#4501 on the first Double header of the year if all goes well for my next adventure. 765 probably won't happen this year, but I am hoping to make #2102 in August and Big Boy #4014 work in the fall!
