Castle Acre Castle - One of England's BEST Medieval Castles

Castle Acre Castle sits in Norfolk and it is one of the most remarkable medieval sites in England. It's history is extremely interesting, however what strikes you is the sheer amount of ruins and remains that exist on the site. Whilst walking around you can really get a sense of what the castle looked like, and how it functioned. It has possible one of the best Outer Bailey's that remain and you can really see where the Great Hall would have stood and the Castle's Chapel which would have been regularly visited. It's story begins following the Battle of Hastings when William the Conqueror wants to impose his will on the people of England and orders the creation of Motte and Bailey castles. The Castle was then fortified in stone and passed through many different hands, including the uncle of 2 of Henry VIII's wives, who were brutally beheaded. What really strikes you when walking around Castle Acre though is the sheer size of the fortification and how incredible it would have looked when it stood at it's full size. It was a huge and imposing structure and would have been well protected and guarded.
