During the time I knew Allen Collins, guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd, 1985 up to his death in 1990, we shared numerous tapes back and forth. On one of the cassette tapes I acquired directly from Allen Collins himself, you never knew what you would find on it. And while listening to one particular cassette tape, I heard a recording that Allen Collins made himself of himself inside his hospital room on October 20, 1978 when he was undergoing skin graft surgery where doctors removed skin from his thigh and transferred it to the arm he had badly injured in the plane crash exactly one year before this recording. I know that Allen Collins made this recording himself because some of the time he is all by himself and alone inside his hospital room until his wife Kathy walked into the room and they begin talking. You can hear that Allen is in pain and sometimes he is buzzing the nurses repeatedly to bring more pain medication for him. And Allen even says he is groggy because of it. In the background you can hear that the reason Allen decided to turn on the tape recorder was because he was watching on TV from his bed a plane crash anniversary special edition show about the plane crash narrated by local story gatekeeper and part-time newsman Tom Wills. Apparently Allen wanted to record the show, but wound up recording himself more than anything else. And that is what you hear in this short 40 second sample I edited out of the original cassette tape Allen Collins gave to me. Take a listen to the voice of Allen Collins, one of the few extremely rare recordings that he himself made and of himself and it includes at some point his lovely wife Kathy.
