Friday Focus - Remembering the Scottish Witch Trials

Over 3,000 people were accused of, and executed for witchcraft in Scotland from the mid-16th century to the early 18th century, leaving a mark in history that is currently experiencing a movement in reconciling these past atrocities. In this week’s Friday Focus talk, Stephanie Shakay Tierney will discuss her current research into how the people accused of witchcraft in the early modern period are memorialised in the landscape and through art, literature, and performance. A brief history of the trials will be given to contextualise this current politic of memory. Stephanie Shakay Tierney is an Armenian American from Denver, Colorado. She is a third-year PhD candidate in Social Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh, holds a master’s degree in Museum Studies from the University of Glasgow, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Colorado, Denver. Stephanie Shakay’s research focuses on the memorialisation and remembrance of the people accused as witches in early modern Scotland; how histories of witchcraft are rediscovered and reassembled through the lens of the present; who the people carrying out the work are; including visual and performance artists and authors, what their motives and motivations are in carrying out the work, and how identity influences practice.
