In this video we’re taking a look at Yamaha’s P125, the middle sibling of the famous Yamaha P series line. This will be another deep dive where we try and go over everything anyone might want to know when browsing the market for a digital piano in this price range. Based’s search statistics, the P125 is the world’s most popular digital piano around the $1,000 range. While this isn’t necessarily indicative of how good or bad this instrument is, it’s certainly an important point to mention. If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support. Tone Engine and Sound: The Yamaha P125 boasts a considerable 192 note polyphony and is built off of their CF Concert Grand Sample set. The quality of the tone engine definitely punches above its weight at this price point. They use what they call “Intelligent Acoustic Control” to manage the audio signal as it’s sent to the speakers, which is basic signal processing that does a nice job of creating an enhanced stereo field to give the player the sense that the piano is larger than it is. There’s 24 on-board tones available with the P125, encompassing all of the usual electric piano, organ and string sounds one would expect. Interestingly, I actually prefer the electric piano tones on this instrument over the more expensive P515! There’s 14 watts of total speaker power split between 2 speakers, which is more than enough for home use and fairly standard at this price point, but there’s also dual ¼” outputs if you need more power and want to connect to an amp. Action: When it comes to action, the Yamaha P125 uses Yamaha’s GHS (Graded Hammer Standard) action. This is a functional action, but even at the same price point, there are better actions out there. If action is your number one priority, this is an area where this instrument might fall short. It uses an out-dated double sensor which means that the accuracy of the output will likely feel lacking to someone who has some previous piano playing experience. This is by no means a deal breaker, but it’s an important consideration depending on your list of priorities when it comes to what you’re looking for in a digital piano. Features: There’s a few things that jump out right away regarding the features on this instrument, such as the USB audio interface functionality, on-board rhythm accompaniment, and the already mentioned dual ¼” output jacks. Another feature, which may not be significant to some, is that the Yamaha P125 allows the player to turn the speakers off independent of having a set of headphones plugged in, which has only recently started to become a standard feature in this price range. For some folks, this will be a huge deal! There’s also a basic on-board record function that will also be important to some people. Conclusions: This is a very solid piano for the price, with the only potential significant downside being the action, which does feel a tier below the rest of the instrument. If the action is not your number one priority, this might be a great option for you, but definitely try to get out to the piano shops and compare for yourself.
