Creating the Sound, creators of in-depth tutorials on recreating classic breakbeats, visit with TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik to examine the microphones used on late-‘60s recording sessions with James Brown and Otis Redding. In this free video tutorial, Getting the Sound cover: • In-depth discussions of the microphones and mic positions used on the drums at Stax Records and King Studios in Cincinnati in the late 1960s. • Issues associated with using rare, vintage (now-antique) microphones today, with modern alternatives to those same mics. • Extensive audio shootouts on four mic positions, using both vintage and modern mics, with detailed side-by-side comparisons. • Examining some of the myths and history about vintage microphones along the way. Dylan Wissing has recorded drums for artists such as Alicia Keys, John Legend, Drake, and Eminem. Together with mix Engineer Cooper Anderson (Wu-Tang Clan, Future, Kanye West, Fun.), he formed Getting the Sound to teach how to replicate an existing vintage recording, an exacting and difficult process. Their work on recreating the “Funky Drummer” and “Tramp” breakbeats led to recent feature articles in the New York Times and Modern Drummer Magazine. “I’m a longtime user of TELEFUNKEN microphones, and recently learned that they have the exact models that would have recorded Clyde Stubblefield with James Brown or Al Jackson Jr. at Stax,” says Dylan. “So of course we leapt at the chance to compare them to the modern Telefunkens that we’re using in the studio every day.” This tutorial is for anyone interested in recording drums, vintage breakbeats, and recreating that sound today.
