Hey what’s up family today we are talking about The idea of generational curses comes primarily from Exodus and verses similar to that referring to the effects of sin being passed down to the 3rd and 4th generation. And so today I want to answer three questions. What is it? How does it get into our families? How can we break it? 1. What is it? It’s a specific pattern (teen pregnancy, divorce, pornography, anger, abuse, adultery, alcoholism) that is deposited into the family where the family members will be more predisposed to repeating because of heightened exposure to it. 2. How does it get there? I want to look at three stages by focusing in on three words in this verse. a. STAGE #1 – INIQUITY – There are several words used in the Bible to describe offense to God (sin, transgression, trespass) and then the word used here which is iniquity. The Hebrew word iniquity is deepest level of sin and literally means something that is “bent” or “deformed.” b. It refers to a specific weakness or stronghold in our lives that comes as a result of consistently, willfully sinning against God without repentance. c. STAGE #2 – VISITING – Notice it says that this “iniquity” in us will “visit” the children down to the 3rd or 4th generation. Some versions translate this word as “punish” but the literally meaning is to visit or to call. So when we have iniquity or strongholds in our lives, we deposit that into our family and it comes visiting and knocking on the door of our children and our children’s children. We still have the choice to open up and let it in. But without the power of the Holy Spirit we will more than likely not have the spiritual power to continue to shut the door in sin’s face. d. STAGE #3 – HATE – Doesn’t refer to hatred but rather choosing or preferring something else over God. 2. How do we break it? a. Realize the power we have – Unfortunately many people never read the rest of the verse that says, “but showing mercy to thousands of generations who love me.” This lets us know that not only can we break the cycles in our families but even more importantly we also have the power to create new ones that reflect God’s righteousness and pass those down to thousands of generations. b. Stop Blaming our Family i. The bible says, “Why do you quote this proverb? The parents ate sour grapes and now the children’s teeth are set on edge.” Meaning because my parents did it then I’m prone to be like them. ii. If you are a Christian we can no longer blame who we are and the decisions that we make on our family or our upbringing. We cannot use our family background as an excuse to stay the way we are because the Holy Spirit who lives in us now gives us the power we need to break any cycle or stronghold that has been deposited into our family. c. Get Accountability – James says to “confess your sins to one another so that you can be healed.” Even though we have the power to break any cycle we must also remember that because of what we were exposed to we will always be more strongly tempted in this area than others, which is why we need people to keep us accountable. So, can Christians experience generational curses? NO. Can Christians be affected by the consequences of generational cycles? see other keywords search : 1.
