Spring 2024 Europe Trip (Part 8): Visiting The Underrated Balkans: Budva And Mostar

I realised this should have been two separate videos as each day/city is about 30 minutes each, but thought it would have been short, so I kinda combined them into one, making this an hour long video. But nonetheless, the scenery around Perast Montenegro is so beautiful with the Dinaric Alps that I jokingly refer Montenegro as an 'underrated Swizerland in the Balkans'. On 24 May, I took a Croatia Bus which was partnered with Flixbus from Dubrovnik to Budva. On the way to Budva, I did stop by another charming tourist destination in Montenegro called Kotor. I have debated between Kotor and Budva but ended up choosing Budva anyways, not only because of the coast, but because IMO, it is the more well known of the two due to the fact there was a temporary McDonalds between 2004 and 2007, but in reality, I heard that Kotor's old town is more stunning, there is more history, and plus, Budva's old town is rather small. In essence, Budva kinda looks like a hybrid between a compact and watered down version of Dubrovnik (which is already small) and Monaco. Even though I chose to visit Budva, in reality, Budva is only 25 km from Kotor (kinda like Boston to Wellesley, a suburb), so they are really close to each other, meaning you can traverse between the two cities. Also, due to the fact Budva's old town is very small, you can literally see all the main highlights in just a few hours. However, I would advise you to bring cash in both Montenegro and Bosnia Herzegovina as most of the museums in Budva require cash, despite the fact they unilaterally use the Euro and the Euro is not a legal tender in Montenegro. In reality on the 24th, when I arrived at Budva, I immediately stopped by the Apartments Manojlovic which was the first hotel I ever booked which demanded that I pay cash (during the December 2019, May 2022, June 2023, and January 2024 Roman trips in Europe, the trips where I went independently, I mostly used chain hotels like Ibis/B&B, so up to this point, I was not made aware of cash only hotels). After checking into the hotel, I took a small tour around Budva, visiting the TQ Plaza to eat at the Babaluu restaurant (could have ate at Jadran Restaurant). Afterwards, I visited the Jovo Ivanovic Modern Gallery, several churches in the old town including a Catholic and Orthodox one, and the Budva Citadel before walking to the Mogren beach and ending the day there. In my opinion, despite the fact Budva's old town is smaller than Dubrovnik and has less to do, I also heavily believe Dubrovnik is more stunning and beautiful and that Budva is too watered down. I however, would suggest Kotor even though I have not visited Kotor due to the fact Budva is kinda unimpressive even as a coastal city and doesn't have much to do besides beaches. Then on 25 May, I had to wake up very early because the Centrotrans bus to Mostar leaves at 7:00 am. In fact, it is so ironic that Centrotrans requires that you book at the bus station as all their tickets 'sold out' despite the fact the seats are half empty. In Mostar, I booked at the Guesthouse Panorama hotel and visited the Museum Of War And Genocide Victims first before hiking towards the Old Bridge, which stood from 1566 all the way to 1993, but then was reconstructed and then dedicated as a UNESCO heritage site. Afterwards, I visited a smaller version of the Old Bridge called the Kriva cuprija before going up the minaret at the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, and hung out at the Kujundziluk Bazar before visiting the Bosnaseum. After hanging out at Mostar's beautiful old town, I decided to eat a 10 BAM (5.50 USD) meal before returning to my hotel on the top of the hill and sleep for one night.
