How much I spent on food in Penang, Malaysia | ‘Til the $ Runs Out

Hi everyone! Here’s my story: I got laid off. Now I'm running with my severance money, traveling and eating the world until the money runs out. Let's see how far it takes me! This is everything I ate and how much it cost in Penang, Malaysia. It includes the restaurants and home cooked meals I made. At the end of each video will be a break down of my costs including food, travel, accommodation, and other (everything else). This is a project for myself to see how far I can travel the world on $20,000! Places in order of appearance: Ming Xiang Tai Pastry Shop 3.5/5 The outside of the chicken pastry was flaky but the inside wasn’t super flavorful. The durian flavored one had a nice texture to the cream. The flavor is similar to fresh durian but tastes more artificial. Beng Kee Claypot Bah Kut Teh 4/5 My favorite part was the salad with lettuce and chicken floss on top. The stew had some nice pieces in it but I wish the broth was more flavorful. I think many of these dishes depend on where you go. Some will be better than others, and not entirely representative of bah kut teh. Yuji Mart 4.5/5 The tea eggs were salty and savory. Really delicious. I ended up buying them regularly during my stay. Durian Stall 4/5 It’s really creamy, and depends on the variety you get it can be sweeter or more on the bitter side. Some of the varieties were too bitter for me. I had one strand called Honey Durian which was my favorite because it had mostly sweet notes. Durian is considered a heaty fruit, so it’s said that if you drink water out of the empty durian shell, you’ll feel better. Ipoh Famous Wooing Kee Beancurd 4.5/5 Toppings were great, peanuts tasted a bit old. The texture of the tofu was wonderful, and the sweetness from the black sugar was perfect but not overly sweet. Sin Seow Fond Lye Cafe 4.5/5 Loh Mai Gai was nice and sticky. This one was served in a silver tin instead of banana leaf. It had tender chicken inside and had a nice soy sauce flavor. Char kuay Teow is a very famous dish in Penang. This particular place was really good. The nice char flavor from the wok and high heat was perfect and the noodles were cooked really nicely. Uncle Lim Kacang Tumbuk 3/5 Not super impressed. The wrapping was better than the peanut candy. The candy was very flaky and crumbly but not a super strong peanut flavor. Huolaksa (Hin Bus Sunday Market) 5/5 The noodles were a bit soft but the broth was unbelievable. This laksa was made with coconut milk and lemon juice. It s a bit sour and sweet and creamy and went really well with the sauce pieces of fish inside. The slices of cucumber were a nice touch to brighten the dish. Nasi Kandar Hajah Myron 3/5 It was ok. The food had been sitting out all day and I think I got a bit sick the next day. The mutton was tasty, but tasted a bit similar to the chicken. The sauce served with the roti was pretty good. Old Soon Kee 4.5/5 Awesome honey chicken and char siu. And the chwee kueh (steamed rice cakes) were a big surprise. I really enjoyed those. Soft with a slight crunch from the pickled veg and the sauce was a bit sweet. The sambal had a nice fishiness to it and paired really well. Anba Coconut 4/5 Young coconuts don’t taste like the coconut water you get from the grocery store in America. It’s very slightly sweet but not that strong. And sometimes there is no flesh inside to eat. They cut a piece of the side of the coconut and you use it to scoop any flesh. It’s a jelly like consistency that is also more refreshing, and not that sweet. Great for the hot hot heat. Gama Supermarket 4.5/5 The oldest supermarket in Penang I believe. Great prices, lots of different produce. I got a lot of things from there throughout my stay. Green House Prawn Mee 5/5 Probably the best prawn mee I had on my trip. It had a wonderful fishy flavor. The lobak was porky and really juicy. And the otak otak was seasoned really well. It was super soft and moist. Reservoir Garden Hakwer Arcade 4.5/5 Chee cheong fun is really delicious. I had multiple stalls. I like the ones where they mix a bit of spice into the shrimp paste. The rice noodles are soft and chewy and the shrimp paste is salty and umami. Not what I expected and very pleasantly surprised. Feng Yi Dumplings 5/5 These are on the pricier side, but this was the best one I had. The rice was super sticky and chewy and the salted egg yolk inside was amazing. It also had some pieces of pork, mushroom and scallop and the fat from the meat gave the rice so much flavor. Presgrave Wan Thun Mee 4.5/5 Wantan mee soup, the noodles were perfectly al dente. The broth was light but very savory. And the wantans had a very thin wrapper and delicious meat. Note - Some of my travel costs are covered by miles - I have converted everything to USD - This video was edited on my phone, so I simplified some things! - This only shows a portion of the things I ate in Penang (:
