The Equalizer producer Coleman Luck talks about the original Equalizer, Edward Woodward, and how he imprinted his own life history onto his character, Robert McCall. The first version of The Equalizer ran on the CBS television network from 1985 to 1989. Edward Woodward played a middle-aged spy who worked for 'The Agency,' who leaves a life of violence and treachery to help ordinary citizens facing overwhelming odds and life-threatening circumstances, and are desperately in need of an "Equalizer." Edward Woodward played Robert McCall as a man weighed down by guilt and deep regrets of the past, and the haunting memories of past sins too horrible to contemplate. To help expiate those sins, McCall helps out the helpless but is still unable to fully escape his relentless conscience. Before The Equalizer, Edward Woodward starred in the British TV series Callan, playing another spy-centric character, and in the films The Wicker Man and Gallipoli. Laurence Olivier once said that Edward Woodward was the finest actor he had ever seen. Nominated for several Emmys and winner of a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Robert McCall as The Equalizer, few would argue Olivier's assessment.
