Friends of Wheeling Tour 902 Main Street - Virginia Apartments

On July 29, 2020 Friends of Wheeling toured 902 Main Street - Virginia Apartments. This 1902 apartment building was designed by noted Wheeling architect Edward Bates Franzheim and built on land that at one time was part of the Stifel Calico Works. The George E. House Improvement Company built the structure and marketed it to Wheeling’s upper middle class. Wing units are spacious (2300 square feet) and originally included maid’s quarters. Smaller “bachelor” units (1500 square feet) are in the center portion. Although they are called apartments, each unit is owned individually under what is believed to be the oldest co-operative arrangement still functioning in the state. We toured two of the wing apartments - 1st floor South (listed for sale at $112K) and 3rd floor ($109K) and one of the “bachelor” apartments (4th floor - $49.5K).
