In this opening scene Hitch and other MPs help to pull an injured civilian from the rubble and as the bodies pile up, the citizens start to question whether Eren’s actions were worth the sacrifice. On one side you have people who see Eren as a sort of villain for killing his own people, whereas on the other side you have those who believe these deaths are a necessary sacrifice to stop them all being wiped out by Marley (and the world). As violence breaks out between the civilians Hitch then returns to HQ to gather more resources to deal with it but as she enters the building she notices this trail of liquid. The trail leads out from from the basement where the Female Titan’s crystal has been locked away for years and this was deliberate trap that Annie had set. By leaving the basement door open and not covering her tracks, she was purposefully hoping that someone would follow the trail, at which point she’d ambush them, steal their clothes and sneak out of town. What she wasn’t expecting though was that the person to come through this door would be Hitch, as these two have a history together not only as roommates in the MPs but also because Hitch was the main person who was monitoring this crystal the whole time. Now in this moment Annie is easily overpowered by her former roommate, since having not moved a muscle in four years, her energy level is understandably quite low. This enabled Hitch to pin her down without much problem but the issue here is that the female titan had already cut herself with this special ring. The blade inside this ring is what she typically uses to transform and so in theory she can use her power to become a titan and obliterate HQ in the process. Of course there’s a possibility that in her weakened state she doesn’t have the strength to do that, but it wasn’t a chance hITCH WAS willing to take. With the power of the titans being so unpredictable it was safer for everyone in the building if she just did what Annie said and that’s how the two of them end up in the stables. The plan here is that Hitch would quietly take the female titan outside of the district and in this sequence we get an insight into what it’s like to live inside a titan crystal. The way Annie describes it’s like she was in a state of partial consciousness where she could hear when people were talking to her but other than that it was basically like a dark dream. As we know she was then freed from her crystal when Eren undid all hardening in the world and once she sees the wall titans in the district, Annie realises that his transmission wasn’t a bluff. On the ground we see more carnage as people mourn their dead relatives and Hitch makes an interesting comment that her only meaningful work has been cleaning up after the destruction. Generally speaking this statement is true for most MPs as their job usually doesn’t involve improving humanity in any way and for most of their existence they’ve been used as a tool to prevent society from progressing. For that reason you can see why Hitch would find some meaning in helping people rebuild after these disasters, and the first time she had to do this job was after the female titan tore up stohess all those years ago. Switching over to the internment zone in Liberio we then see one of the more realistic aspects of the rumbling, which is that these eldians have to actually try and convince regular people that they’re about to be trampled. Given that Eren’s declaration was only heard by subjects of Ymir, the Marlyean guards have no way of verifying what the crowd is telling them and the guy in charge seems to believe this is all some kind of elaborate eldian conspiracy. The anime then transitions very nicely to the sound of shots on the island, as instructor Shadis overhears Floch firing at the volunteers.
