Some compounds are adsorbed more strongly to the stationary phase than other and thus they will be eluted (washed down) the column at a very slow rate, thus can be separated on the basis of their elution rate accordingly. Thus naturally coloured components of spinach Spinacia oleracea) and other leaves can be separated by this technique. The dark colour of the spinach is a combination of β-carotene and chlorophylls.
