Arturia MicroFreak, Zoom MS-70CDR, The Spaces in Between

This ambient jam is about using delays to explore the spaces in between the notes of the main melody, composing with delays, featuring the Arturia MicroFreak synth and the Zoom MS-70CDR effect pedal. My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/ The patches for the MicroFreak and the MS-70 are included below. The jam consists two simple 16-step sequences, that are introduced at the beginning of the jam. The MicroFreak patch is a basic virtual analog patch, with the Cyclic Envelope modifying filter cutoff, and a random LFO (slow, retriggering for every note) modifying Cyclic Envelope fall time and oscillator timbre (VAnalog oscillator, timbre varies from square wave from narrow to 50% to full oscillator sync). During the jam, I play with timbre (square wave), shape (triangle/saw wave), filter cutoff and resonance, Cyclic Envelope fall time and amount, Amplitude Envelope attack, release/decay, sustain. I also use the spice and dice functionality a lot. I also change the sequencer rate from 1/1 to 1/8T through all the steps inbetween. There are three delays in series on the MS-70CDR. The timing of the delays are set (in milliseconds) carefully to fill in the 7 "free" 32th note steps in a melody played in 4/4 at 120 BPM. By turning delays on and off, I can choose which of those 7 free steps to fill up, which greatly affects both the perceived melody and the rhythmic feel. The random LFO on the MicroFreak changes timbre, which affects perceived melody and rhythm. And the spice and dice affects the Amplitude Envelope and the notes (on/off, slight variations), which also to a great extent affects perceived rhythm and melody. Delay 1 is 9 32th notes (563 ms). Delay 2 is 18 32th notes (1125 ms). Delay 3 is 36 32th notes (2250 ms). Together they fill the 7 free 32-th note steps. Delay 1 is the "busiest" one, so I turn this off for the fastest sequencer rates. The Zoom MS-70CDR patches are included below. To load a patch into the MS-70, connect your MS-70 to your computer using a USB cable, go to https://g200kg.github.io/zoom-ms-util..., right-click an available patch slot, select "Import Patch from text", and paste in this text. The audio is recorded on a Korg KP2S and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on iPhoneX. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 15.
